College Grad Doesn’t Blame Wall Street – Common Sense Wins | GetOffWallStreet.com

I recently came across a letter written by a soon to be college senior.  The letter reads that she is about to graduate college debt free.  To accomplish this, she has worked 30 hours a week at minimum wage, while going to school full time.  She hardly ever eats out and has no new car.  She also lives in a modest apartment and realizes there are things she can not afford to have.

What a concept!

I would love to make copies of this and distribute to all of the B.O. infested lowlifes congregating on wall street for one big pot-fest.

To whom this may concern, please contact me if you read this.  I would love to get your story publicized ASAP.

It’s time some common sense made its way out of a college, instead of the typical anarchist, socialist, communist bullshit.

Here is the full transcript, in case you can’t read it.

“I am a college senior, about to graduate completely debt free.

I pay  for all of my living expenses by working 30+ hours a week making barely above minimum wage.

I chose a moderately priced in state public university. I started saving for school at age 19.

I got decent grades in high school I received 2 scholarships which cover 90% of my tuition.  I currently have a 3.8 GPA.

I live comfortable in a cheap apt. knowing I can’t have everything I want.  I dont eat out every day, or even once a month.  I have no credit card, new car, iPad or smart phone – and I’m perfectly OK with that. If i did have debt, I would not blame Wall Street or the government for my own bad decisions.

I live below my means to continue saving for the future.  I expect nothing to be handed to me, and will continue to work my @$$ off for everything I have.  That’s how it’s supposed to work.

I am NOT the 99% and whether or not you are is YOUR decision.”

Missing one vital point, even if this is true; The composer went to a community college. How can you buck socialist system if you rely on it?

    • Jeff Knutson October 24, 2011 at 7:25 pm #

The picture above is a lie because:

      1. No one gets scholarships covering 90% of their tuition unless they are a) extremely smart and have excellent grades and maintain those grades throughout college, or b) on an athletic scholarship. In either case, they wouldn’t be able to keep those scholarships working 30 hours a week because they a) couldn’t maintain their grades on those kinds of hours, b) couldn’t maintain their athletic performance with those kinds of hours, or c) wouldn’t be allowed to work under NCAA rules.

      2. No one pays for all of their college costs working during the summer and part time during the school year unless they are working on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska or some other similar job. Even then, most such jobs don’t correspond neatly with the academic school calendar which again rules out getting a 90% scholarship.

      3. You can’t even cover extremely frugal living expenses on minimum wage, even working more than 40 hours a week. Adding school costs (even with 90% of tuition covered which has been shown to be BS) totally blows this out of the water.

      4. This person is part of the 99%. They are earning minimum wage and not even working full time at that. They are assuredly part of the 99% of us who are not making more than a $1 million per year.

      5. The last, and biggest, lie is that any of the things on that sign are possible and are achievable if you only live responsibly. Essentially, if you’ve gotten out of college and have student loan and or credit card debt, you’re irresponsible. The truth is, if you’ve gotten out of college and you have no student loan or credit card debt, you are either a) part of an extremely small percentage of people who are extraordinary talented and have made excellent use of those talents or b) from a wealthy and supportive family.

So this is all a lie because???

        A) you refuse to believe that this individual is actually “part of an extremely small percentage of people who are extraordinary talented and have made excellent use of those talents”

        B) it primarily doesn’t fit into your view of how the world works.

Good luck getting scholarships to pay for 90% for your tuition this day in age. Congrats to her or him, but that is unusual. Especially for an in State University. I would be curious to find out which school this person attended? Most don’t get scholarships for having “decent grades” in high school. Consider yourself very fortunate and try not to judge others for their less than lucky stories. The other points such as no ipad, no smart phone, saving, working hard etc. are great points. Stay positive, keep saving and good work.

It is you who is missing the point, Val. By whose definition is a state college Socialistic? This person received academic scholarships but that does not mean her education was free. Can you really not see that, or are you just being obtuse? And Amy, nowhere in her missive did this person pass judgement on others. She merely stated the facts of her situation. Yes, she is indeed fortunate. Lucky, if you will. But she created her own luck through hard work and discipline, and for that I applaud her.

    Several problems with this.

First the young lady seems to be saying i live a limited life and i like it, and so should you. Don’t complain about not having enough funds to even eat out once a month, or having to save since your 19 for a degree or diploma that does nothing to guaranty you a job.

Once more like all of these i have it tough but i don’t blame wall street posts seem to misunderstand – it’s not that people are blaming wall street for their personal problems, it’s that we want them held accountable for wrong doing that has led to the current economic climate. They committed fraud and great theft, sold bad assets as good, misrepresented outcomes, and generally conducted themselves in a criminal manor and have NOT been held to account.

Mean while people are working like dogs if they are lucky just to sink a little slower.

All very nice and well this one girl got lucky, received scholarships that paid for most of her education [scholarships are rare you know, if they were there for everyone we'de be talking about free public universities right?] and lives a strictly disciplined life. But lets get back to her when she has a few kids to support and see what she has to say.

    • Not Sam October 26, 2011 at 9:37 pm #

First and foremost she is not saying that anyone should enjoy a “limited” life. Essentially this is that quiet girl in high school that we all thought was weird for not hanging out with her friends after school rather she chose to go straight home and do her homework, (we all remember who she was). You know the one that everyone thought was so smart but in all actuality she just did her homework, tried hard and asked questions.

2nd…Ok. yes some individuals on WS should be held accountable, however don’t you believe that Washington should share in that blame also? These companies should have failed, and yes we all understand that if they would have failed that it would have been bad….really bad. But it should have happened they should have never been bailed out in the first place and if you want those corporations to be held accountable so should the individuals who pushed for them to be bailed out.

Lastly scholarships aren’t rare, we as a society the majority of the time take the easy way out whether it is through loans, financial aid or help from our family. I could probably count on one hand the number of individuals who would want to write a well thought out essay and go through the application process of a scholarship. Rather then work for something we usually opt for the path of least resistance because it allows us to continue with our everyday life.

And if you think that having children to support will somehow shake this woman’s foundation I would have to say you’re mistaken, because if she can have the discipline and find the resources to act like a responsible adult I’m pretty positive that she could be a very responsible parent.

Luck has nothing to do with what this woman has accomplished, quit confusing dedication and success with serendipity.
